Tegu Factory sits just outside Karatina, in Nyeri County, and it's one of the larger and older wet mills in the Tekangu Farmers Cooperative Society. Tekangu runs four factories total and has a reputation for clean processing and the kind of classic Nyeri cup that makes people want to buy Nyeri coffee. Around 800 active members deliver cherry to Tegu each season. They produce roughly 1,100 sixty-kilogram bags.
Elevation runs 1,600 to 1,800 meters on clay loam soils. Rainfall averages around 1,400mm a year, and temperatures hover near 20.5°C. Those conditions slow cherry maturation, which pushes flavor concentration — it's one of the reasons Nyeri has the reputation it does. Flowering happens February through March, harvest runs October through December, and coffee is generally available to ship between March and April.
Farmers grow SL 28, SL 34, Batian, and Ruiru 11. The SLs are there for cup quality, Batian and Ruiru 11 for resilience and yield. It's a practical mix, and it works. At the factory, cherry is sorted before pulping, then fermented overnight in parchment and washed.
From there it's graded by density into P1, P2, P3, P lights, and pods — a clean separation system that keeps quality sorted at the source. Drying happens on raised beds over 8 to 14 days.
