Kayu Coffee Factory has been washing coffee in Murang'a County since 1964, which makes it one of the the older stations in the region. Most Kenyan coffee that reaches the U.S. comes off the slopes of Mount Kenya, but Kayu sits off the Aberdare Ridge instead, a separate range with its own growing conditions. It's now run under the New Kiriti Farmers Cooperative Society, and the station still pulps its cherry with water pumped straight from the nearby Kagondo River.
The coffee around Kayu grows as a field blend rather than sorted rows of one variety, mostly SL28 and SL34 planted together with some Ruiru 11 worked in. SL28 and SL34 both come from single-tree selections made by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in the 1930s, SL28 chosen for its drought resistance and cup quality, SL34 descended from a Typica tree on the Loresho Estate outside Nairobi. Ruiru 11 is a newer, disease-resistant hybrid, bred at Kenya's Ruiru research station after a coffee berry disease epidemic destroyed half the country's crop in 1968 and released commercially in 1985.
This particular lot is the AA separation, meaning it's been graded down to the largest screen size out of the harvest. The cup is giving us distinct notes tropical fruits, hibiscus, and an unmistakable effervescence.
