Kainamui, a washing station in Kenya’s Kirinyaga County, processes coffee from around 2,000 members of the New Ngariama Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Society. The cooperative’s members, mostly women, grow coffee trees under shade on nearby farms between 1,600-1,800 meters above sea level.

Kainamui, managed by Lemmy Nyaga, processes and dries coffee cherries before transporting dried parchment to Nairobi for milling and sale. The factory, located at 1,650m above sea level on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, benefits from fresh, clean water pumped from the nearby Nyamindi river. New Ngariama, originally part of the larger Ngariama society established in 1963, split into smaller cooperatives, including New Ngariama. The cooperative has three washing stations: Kamwangi, Kainumui, and Kiamugumo. Kainumui is the first factory to be established.

New Ngariama Farmers’ Cooperative Society is Rainforest Alliance certified and encourages sustainable farming, including organic fertilizer use. They’ve built soaking pits for wastewater treatment at their three sites. The co-op supports members with pre-harvest financing, school fees, and other assistance.

This season’s harvest offers the acidity of white currant or lemon candy, with a pronounced tropical sweetness reminiscent of mango and pineapple.
